After rigorous testing of the new account setup options, it became evident that both Dashlane and 1Password have effectively streamlined the registration process. Users can now opt to set up their accounts without a master password, marking a significant departure from the traditional approach to password management.

The seamless user experience coupled with robust security measures underscores both platforms dedication to delivering a user-centric solution without compromising on data protection.

What’s the downside?

That being said, when an account is passwordless, the only means of accessing the associated passwords is by proving your identity through a trusted device that has already authenticated the user’s credentials with the password management servers.

However, if none of the trusted devices are accessible, the user is locked out of their account, which may be permanent. The principal advantage of zero-knowledge credential managers is that the user alone can unlock the vault. However, without a master password, there is no fallback option to restore access to the encrypted vault.

Both providers have continued to furnish end-users with recovery keys, which can be considered as lengthy passwords. Essentially, what has been introduced is the provision for two means of unlocking an account, rather than relying on one master password. The question that arises is whether this new approach is equally as secure as having one master password. Only time will tell.
