128: EE is first UK operator to end 3G services in 2024

UK’s major network operators, Vodafone, EE, O2, and Three, have agreed to phase out 3G and 2G services by 2033 to improve UK mobile network connectivity.

Vodafone leads with a pilot for the 3G switch-off in Feb 2023 and plans to shut down across the UK from Jun 2023, while keeping its 2G network operational for calls and texts.

EE is set to fully close its 3G network between Jan-Mar 2024 and discontinue 2G later in the decade. Three aims to cease 3G by the end of 2024, having no 2G network.

O2 will start phasing out 3G services in 2025, but hasn’t confirmed plans for its 2G network yet, likely being the only provider offering 3G network services throughout 2024.

Customers using non-4G/5G-supporting devices are urged to upgrade for continued access to mobile data services. For more on EE’s plans, visit their official announcement on the EE website.
