The digital government platform GOV.UK, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully modernizing its infrastructure.

This has brought in numerous improvements, such as enhanced security, scalability, and cost savings. The project marks the most extensive software infrastructure upgrade the GOV.UK website has undergone since its launch, signifying a significant moment in its evolution.

The decision to modernize was prompted by the end-of-life deadline for the platform’s system software. The infrastructure, consisting of multiple applications and computer hardware, was running on an outdated version of the operating system (OS) – Ubuntu, and using Puppet for configuration management. As the software approached the end of its supportable lifespan, the GOV.UK team recognized the need for a complete upgrade to address growing compatibility issues and streamline maintenance efforts.

Following in HM Land Registries footsteps back in 2021, the GOV.UK teams decided to move to a container-based approach, which provides unparalleled scalability, reduced maintenance, and increased readiness to handle surges in website traffic, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 response efforts. The engineering team orchestrated a meticulous plan for the modernization project, capitalizing on the automation available in Kubernetes and the scalability of container-based applications.

A pivotal moment in the project’s journey was the trial run on the live website, a daring move that paid off by enabling the team to identify and address minor issues, establish managerial confidence, and foster a culture of collaborative problem-solving.

The impact of the modernization effort has been substantial, with the platform now capable of swift scalability, reduced operational costs, streamlined security patching, and improved agility in application and configuration changes. Furthermore, the transition to modern infrastructure has unlocked the potential to recruit from a broader talent pool, paving the way for continued innovation and efficiency.

Looking ahead, the team is focused on eliminating residual components running on the old infrastructure to fully realize the benefits of the modernized platform. With the transition to a container-based infrastructure, exciting possibilities emerge, including the development of local replicas for developers, enhanced automated testing, and further improvements in resilience and productivity.

As GOV.UK embraces its modernized infrastructure, it is poised to set new benchmarks in government digital services, underlining its commitment to simplifying, streamlining, and accelerating digital government for all.
